Savings depend on the whole building
Insulation savings are affected by climate, fuel type, energy prices, existing insulation, heating habits, air leakage and the area treated. A headline saving from another home may not transfer to yours.
Begin with the weakest practical part of the thermal envelope, but consider moisture and ventilation at the same time.
Installation quality matters
Gaps, compression and thermal bridges can reduce performance. Insulation should fit continuously without blocking required ventilation or creating moisture traps.
Electrical cables, recessed lights, chimneys and roof ventilation require appropriate clearances and specialist consideration.
Use cautious payback figures
Calculate installed cost after confirmed incentives, then divide it by a conservative estimate of annual savings. Test more than one energy-price scenario instead of assuming today's price remains unchanged.
Some benefits are not captured by simple payback: warmer surfaces, reduced draughts, improved comfort and potentially lower condensation risk when the whole system is designed correctly.
Get an assessment when risk is higher
Older or protected buildings can behave differently from modern construction. Materials must be compatible with how moisture moves through walls and roofs.
Seek qualified advice for spray foam, damp, inaccessible cavities, old wiring, asbestos risk and major ventilation changes.
