Calculate the number of drops
Measure the room perimeter and divide it by the wallpaper width. Round up to a whole drop. For feature walls, measure only the selected wall but include returns or reveals that will also be covered.
Measure the full wall height and add trimming allowance at the top and bottom. Do not assume every wall is identical.
Include the pattern repeat
For patterned wallpaper, each cut length may need to be rounded up to the next full repeat so adjacent strips align. A large repeat can reduce the number of usable drops from each roll.
Straight match, offset match and free match designs waste different amounts. Read the label and supplier instructions before calculating.
Check batch numbers
Wallpaper from different print batches can show slight shade differences. Order enough from one batch and inspect every roll before hanging. Keep packaging until the work is complete.
Ask about the return policy for unopened rolls. A spare matching roll can also be valuable for future repairs.
Prepare the wall
Wallpaper will not solve active damp, movement cracks or loose plaster. Repair the cause, make the surface sound and follow guidance for lining paper, sizing or primer.
Specialist papers, murals, silk and historic substrates may justify an experienced installer.
