Planning note: Building rules, product standards, taxes and professional requirements differ by location. Use this guide for preparation, then verify local requirements.

Build the list from the work sequence

Organise materials by preparation, first fix, main installation and finishing rather than creating one long shopping list. This shows what is needed first and prevents finish products from arriving before the site can protect them.

Link every item to a drawing, measurement or task. Unexplained quantities are difficult to check.

Record complete specifications

Write product name, size, colour, finish, quantity, supplier, lead time and approved alternative. Include compatible primers, adhesives, fixings, trims and sealants rather than only the visible product.

Check that products used together form a compatible system and suit the environment.

Plan waste and spares

Choose waste allowances based on pattern, fragility and room shape. Round up to supplier pack sizes and keep suitable matching material for future repairs.

Do not apply one waste percentage to every item. Made-to-measure units and bulk fixings behave very differently.

Coordinate ordering and storage

Confirm access, delivery dates, inspection procedures and dry secure storage. Open and inspect goods within the supplier's reporting window without destroying returnable packaging unnecessarily.

Track ordered, delivered, checked and installed status separately.
